Disaster preparedness

We are heavily involved in assisting communities prepare for impacts of all hazards while raising awareness through training and education sessions. Having communities engage in the process of identifying strength and weaknesses gives them the power and dignity they deserve to better enable them to work and respond to crises in their communities. We ensure communities are aware of all possible hazards, not only hurricanes but earthquakes, fires, floods, tsunamis, extreme dry seasons and flooding.

We are committed to supporting the communities of Anguilla as they build their resiliency.

Disaster response

Disaster Response focuses on assisting the members of the community who were affected by a disaster. Whether it is helping one family that was most affected by a localized house fire or an entire nation recovering from a category 5 hurricane, our response component is there to ensure that adequate help is available to the most vulnerable in our community.

Volunteers for the disaster programme are trained in CPR/First Aid/AED, as well as pre and post disaster assessments, logistics, communications, relief, needs assessment warehouse management and psychological support.

Disaster risk reduction (DRR)

We cannot prevent a hazard from happening, but we can prevent it from becoming a disaster.

The Anguilla Red Cross is striving to create a culture of disaster prevention in Anguilla. Our DRR programme started in June 2012 and since then we have been recognised by the National Disaster Office for outstanding work done in community engagement through risk reduction activities. Our DRR activities have included mapping out capacities and vulnerabilities in communities, assisting families in household preparedness, sharing information and training community emergency response teams.

Climate change

The Anguilla Red Cross is aware of the changing climate and with these bigger, stronger and more destructive weather systems. With this in mind, we are committed to supporting more green initiative by other NGOs and Government departments. We are striving for a more green friendly operation by integrating technology at all levels of our operations.
